‘It’s an expression of identity’: the TikToker taking the western Sydney accent to the world

For young people living in western Sydney, Mahmoud Ismail is “that TikToker that reports on the area”. He attracts millions of views to his interviews with locals.

But why? Ismail says it’s not just his face and name that reflects an ethnic identity, but also how he sounds.

“It’s the representation and the relatability,” he says. “Some people hate my accent. Some people say I sound like I have three sausages in my mouth.”

As Denmark prepares to welcome a new king and queen to the throne, an unassuming pub on the opposite side of the globe is celebrating its role in the ascension of the world’s first Australian-born monarch.

Deadly brown snake bites Queensland woman in her bed while another serpent seen in fridge ice dispenser

A Queensland woman has been bitten in her bed by the world’s second most venomous snake, the state’s ambulance service says.

The eastern brown snake bit the woman, who is in her 20s, on her hand in the early hours of Friday on a rural property in the Western Downs, two and a half hours west of Brisbane.

“Not a surprise to wake up to,” the Queensland ambulance service wrote on Facebook, adding that a Toowoomba-based LifeFlight rescue helicopter had taken the woman to hospital.

The rising fame and viral antics of a 600kg southern elephant seal known for venturing away from the coast and hauling himself about the streets of Tasmania’s southern beach suburbs, have left marine experts concerned for his welfare.

Neil the seal has become a social media celebrity, with an Instagram account that documents his life accruing more than 45,000 followers since he was officially identified on a “haul out”, a period in which seals come to land to rest, in July 2022.
